In January, many social media users discussed posts reminding that in the cult action movie, killer robots led by artificial intelligence enslaved humanity in 2024. We checked to see if the film contains such a warning.
January 8 English-language account Declaration of Memes on social network X posted a short excerpt from the movie "Terminator" with the caption: "Who else is ready for the robot apocalypse that will happen this year?" The tweet received more than 660,000 views. The next day, a video with the comment “Oh-oh” reposted Elon Musk, as a result of which the video received almost 28 million more views. Subsequently records that in the Terminator universe, the artificial intelligence Skynet, which controls all computers on the planet, started a war with humanity in 2024, became viral in other languages and platforms. At the same time, many authors jokingly asked subscribers thank for their help with their robot vacuum cleaners, smart speakers and ChatGPT.
For example, on VKontakte such posts appeared in the magazine’s public pages Maxim (11,000 views at the time of writing this analysis), edition "Typical programmer" (44,000), as well as "Ax - hot news"(48,000), Dankest (24,000), Popcorn (19,000), etc. On Telegram, even more users were interested in the news - the channels “Russia now"(285,000 views), "Ax - hot news"(283,000), "Mousetrap"(196,000), "Exploit"(193,000), "Putin on Telegram"(183,000), "Moment of Russia" (172,000), "Bocharik (yep, that same one)"(138,000), "Backdoor"(128,000), MDK (123,000), "Banned" (105,000) and "Briefly speaking"(102,000).
First, let's find out what is said in the viral video, which is a nine-second fragment of the film. It shows dialogue two main heroes paintings by Sarah Connor and soldier Kyle Reese who arrived from the future:
- Listen, I'm not stupid! They don’t know how to do such things yet.
- That's it for now. But they will be able to in about 40 years.
According to the plot, the main action of the action movie is happening in 1984 (when the picture and came out for hire). From this, the authors of the posts concluded that Reese’s warning applies to 2024, and the inscription over the frames from the film says the same. However, the viral excerpt does not directly talk about either war or the takeover of the planet by artificial intelligence. Reese only claimed that in about 40 years something completely new would appear - obviously, it was about killer robots, terminators.
It is noteworthy that in some Russian-speaking publications you can find an extended version of the same dialogue in Russian, which includes another replica Riza:
The 600 series [of Terminators] had rubber skin. We noticed them easily. But these are new. They look like people: sweat, bad breath, everything else. They are very difficult to detect. I had to wait until he attacked you to find him.
The hero talked about the famous robot, which played Arnold Schwarzenegger - Terminator T-800, Model 101. The distinctive feature of this machine was "living flesh" over a metal skeleton. At the same time, in his story, Reese remembered other, simpler robots that had obviously been created earlier.
In fact, in the first part of the film series, the exact year the apocalypse began is not named. Moreover, since one of the main concepts of this franchise is time travel, in further projects the date is often changed (this also applies to some other key events): the war of robots against people began in the 1990s, and in the 2000s, and in the 2010s, and in the 2020s. How Judgment Day happened in Reese's film reported Connor a few minutes after the excerpt circulated on the Internet:
There was a nuclear war. In a few years from now, all this, this place and everything around, will disappear. It will simply disappear. There were survivors. There, here. Nobody even knew who started it. They were machines, Sarah... A network of defense computers. New, powerful, connected to everything - they were entrusted with managing everything. Next Reese toldthat he did not see the war itself and grew up after it. At the same time, according to the plot, he arrived from 2029 - that's just five years after 2024. Reese served, according to him words, from 2021 to 2027, until he came under the command of John Connor, Sarah’s son. Thus, according to the first film in the franchise, the war began long before 2024. And in none of timelines of the Terminator universe, Judgment Day did not occur in this particular year.
The Internet loves to make up such fake predictions. For example, earlier there were reports on social networks that the actions of post-apocalyptic films “I am a legend" (in this case, vaccines were falsely blamed for the end of the world) and "Mad Max” are happening in 2021, although this is not the case.
