Is it true that Arnold Schwarzenegger wore a T-shirt with a picture of Crimea and the words “I'll be back”?

A photo of the actor wearing a T-shirt with a silhouette of the Crimean Peninsula with an iconic phrase from the movie “Terminator” is circulating on social networks. We have verified the authenticity of this photo.

In the summer of 2022, Internet users distributed a photo in which the famous Hollywood actor and former governor of California Arnold Schwarzenegger was depicted wearing a T-shirt with a pro-Ukrainian print. The applied picture shows the outlines of the Crimean peninsula, on which the catchphrase “I'll be back” is located. This movie quote spoken Schwarzenegger's hero in the sci-fi action film "Terminator" has become one of the most famous in the world.

In June, Twitter accounts posted posts with these photos. Free Ukraine (over 18,000 likes), Tuana (almost 8000) and Tonia Mastrobuoni (250), as well as senior policy adviser to the US Helsinki Anti-Corruption Commission Paul Massaro (though he deleted the tweet after a while, but stayed archival copy). On VKontakte in public "Evil Crimean" And "Blacklist | Alushta" these posts received over 20,000 and 10,000 views respectively.

The earliest publications with this photo date back to 2014. Examples can be found on VKontakte (here, here And here), Twitter (here, here And here) or LiveJournal, and on Ukrainian media websites, such as "Television Week", "Ukrainian news", "Reviewer" And "Phrase.ua".

Using a reverse image search, we found out that the original photo of Schwarzenegger done back on June 30, 2012 - almost two years before the Russian Federation in March 2014 turned on The Crimean peninsula is part of its territory. According to the site Zimbio.com, dedicated to entertainment news, that day Schwarzenegger had lunch with his friends (including another Hollywood star, Sylvester Stallone) at Cafe Roma in Beverly Hills, California.

On the website presented more than a dozen photographs from the paparazzi, and one of them completely coincides with the photo from the posts about Crimea. However, it has been edited. In the original Iron Arnie T-shirt there are no images at all, it is just plain. In other photographs from other angles there is also no print with Crimea and a phrase from “The Terminator”. So someone just put the picture on top of the T-shirt in a graphics editor. Moreover, in 2014 there was also a different version of Photoshop: on the same Arnold T-shirt it is written “Crimea is Russia” (examples here, here, here And here).

Let’s add that there is another version of the picture - there the image of Crimea (this time against the background of the colors of the Ukrainian flag) and the inscription “I’ll be back” are not on Schwarzenegger’s T-shirt, but on his tablet computer. But even in this case, the picture has been edited. The original photo was taken in January 2013, when the former Mr. Olympia was promoting his new film "The Hero's Return" and in honor of this communicated with fans on Reddit.com. As confirmation that it was really him, the actor posted a photo of himself and a tablet, where it was written on the screen: “This is Arnold. Ask me anything. Reddit.com." By the way, in his first post, he, of course, used the phrase “I’ll be back.”

Despite the fact that the above photographs have been altered, Schwarzenegger has repeatedly expressed support for Ukraine. For example, in January 2014, especially for Ukrainians at Euromaidan, the actor recorded a short video message in which he wished them success in peacefully defending democracy and freedom. And in mid-March 2022, Arnold published a nine-minute video in which he addressed the Russians and accused the Russian government of lying about the motives and progress of the special operation in Ukraine.

As for Schwarzenegger’s opinion specifically on the issue of annexing Crimea, in 2014 we were only able to find his joke. During an interview dedicated to the premiere of the action film "Sabotage" March 19, 2014, his asked: “Are we paying enough energy and attention to what is happening with Russia and Crimea?” The former governor responded to this with humor replied: “I don’t interfere in these foreign policy matters. But I think they should all just stop what they're doing now and go see the movie Sabotage."
