Some similar posts briefly reportedthat one of the main characters of The Simpsons died in the last episode of the 36th season. “An era has passed,” the Telegram channel commented on the news Peopletalk (43,000 views at the time of writing this analysis). The 18th and final episode of the 36th season of The Simpsons, entitled Stranger Things (can be translated as “Detached Affairs”, a reference to the title of the series “Stranger Things") came out aired back on May 18, 2025. In the story, Bart and Lisa Simpson stop watching their once-favorite animated series “Itchy and Scratchy,” after which the brother and sister grow apart. Noticing this, Marge begs her children to never stop communicating. However, having matured, Lisa and Bart broke their promise and have almost no contact. At the same time, it was shown that at some point Marge actually died: her funeral was shown on the screen. Further events unfold in an even more distant future - 35 years later. At the end of the episode, the mother watches the children from heaven.

Errors in most publications about Marge's death clearly indicate that their authors did not watch the episode and are only relaying other people's incorrect retellings. For example, in note Ren-TV channel called the episode “Very Strange Things” and reported that it contains scenes that only “hint” at Marge’s death. In addition, in the issue the heroine died of an unknown reason, and not due to a rare genetic disease, as claimed many authors. And Lisa found not a letter from her mother, but a disc with a video recording that she made in case she died before Homer. In his treatment Marge did not ask the children to take care of their father, but expressed the hope that brother and sister live shoulder to shoulder.

Although The Simpsons has been running for over 35 years and has 790 episodes, the characters in the show are almost don't change. Nevertheless, during the entire existence of the series, some of them were dying. Some of them remain dead to this day (for example, Maud Flanders, Murphy Bloody Gums And Mona Simpson), but there were cases when heroes came back to life without any explanation (for example, as fans calculated, Hans Molman died more than 40 times). The main characters are not immune to death either - they regularly died in Halloween specials or in episodes where the action is partially set in the future.
For example, at the end of the episode Barting Over, released in 2003, shows the world 50 years after the main events of the series and the viewer sees Homer's grave. At the end of the episode The Boys of Bummer (2007) featured the ghosts of Marge and Homer, 60 years later, watching an aged Bart from the sky. And in the issue Days of Future Future (2014) Homer dies after an accident, then clones take his place one by one, and 30 years later the hero becomes a robot.

IN final In the 29th season, released in 2018, Bart falls into a coma after being struck by lightning, and when he comes out of it, he claims that he now knows how his relatives will die in the future. Next, a cut of scenes is shown, from which it becomes known that at the age of 59, Homer was shot by police, Marge married Ned Flanders and died at 84, Bart and Lisa died at 80 and 98, respectively. At the same time, Maggie Simpson, apparently, became an immortal cosmic entity.

June 26, 2025 Variety published a comment from The Simpsons showrunner Matt Selman, who assured: Marge is still alive and will be in the animated series for many years to come. “Obviously, since all the episodes of The Simpsons about the future are just speculative fantasies, they will be different every time,” Selman said. “Marge will probably never die again.” The only place where Marge is dead is in one of the future episodes that aired six weeks ago."
Variety's piece also recalled that The Simpsons writers have abandoned the classic sitcom structure many times in recent years and flirted with complex, nonlinear storytelling. For example, first episode of the same 36th season "pretended" to be the finale of the entire animated series (although in April 2025 the show extended for four more seasons). Therefore, regular viewers should have already gotten used to such time jumps, but for everyone else, Marge’s death in one of the episodes became news, which many media outlets and bloggers took out of context. “Here’s my take: Websites need traffic, and headlines are essentially traffic,” Selman shared. - And then at the very end of the article you can explain that the title misled you. Every media outlet that published the story knew that Marge was by no means dead. They knew all this, but they still published such headlines.” On the other hand, the showrunner also sees advantages in this: such interest proves that The Simpsons remains an important part of pop culture. “I think it shows that people care about Marge. In the long run, it's probably good for business, even when these ridiculous, misleading stories go viral! Selman concluded.
In addition, back in May, the day after the episode was released, the website Cracked published interview with the writer of that episode, Tim Long. He noted that Estranger Things became the final episode "largely by accident." At the same time, according to Long, a time jump was conceived in the series from the very beginning, and the idea to move the story into the future 35 years belonged to Selman. That is, if this episode had been released in the middle of the season, then Marge would have returned to the screens in the next one.
Thus, although Marge did die in the most recent episode of The Simpsons, this scene only took place in one of the futures, and this is not the first time such an event has happened in the animated series. According to the showrunner of The Simpsons, the heroine will return in new episodes.
