Is it true that Ukrainian refugees broke the “chair van Gogh” in the museum?

In June 2025, Russian-speaking Telegram channels spoke about an incident that allegedly occurred in one of the European cities due to the fault of two citizens of Ukraine. We checked the correctness of such publications.

In viral posts it is reported that in one of the European museums, a married couple from Ukraine waited for a caretaker to leave photos with one of the exhibits - a chair that was inlaid by Swarovski crystals. At some point, the man tried to sit on this chair, and he fell apart, after which the Ukrainians hastily left the room. Publications are accompanied by a video that captures the incident, and the text of the posts themselves gives excuses for violators of the order. A woman named Oksana allegedly asked the authorities not to deport them, and also reported that they received tickets to the museum under a refugee program. Her spouse, unemployed Mykola, explained his act with a desire to take a picture for relatives and show them a “chic life” in Europe.

The main platform, where the news of the incident with the Ukrainians spread, was Telegram - there, among others, channels were published "Russian Kolobok and Green Trick"(194,000 views at the time of writing this analysis),"Uncle Glory"(191 000),"Observer"(179 000),"Bottle"(178 000) and Voblya (131 000).

A genuine roller dispersed on Telegram. Incident happened In the Palace of Maffei in Verona, where since 2020 exhibited Part of the art collection of industrialist Luigi Carlon. In the exposition, ancient canvases are adjacent to samples of contemporary art, such as a chair created by Italian artist Nikola Bolla and decorated with Swarovski crystals. In shape, he imitates a chair with paintings Vincent Van Gogh, and therefore received the name in honor of the Dutch impressionist.

The first to report on June 12 on his Facebook page on June 12, the first museum In the Palace of Maffei, he also published a video from the cameras of video surveillance. “The nightmare of each museum has become a reality,” the publication said, the authors of which called to respect the subjects of art. It was also reported that the restorers managed to restore the precious chair. The incident itself, Check Media, occurred in April.

“Verified” studied the publications about the “Van Gogh chair” in authoritative sources and did not find mentions in them that Ukrainians were the culprits of the incident. Moreover, these notes directly say that the couple left the museum before its employees noticed something was amiss, and the personalities of the man and women were not established. In Russian-speaking Telegram channels during the first one and a half days of distribution, the news is also not Contained Information about the nationality of negligent visitors.

In a conversation with the “verified” the deputy director of the museum in the palace, Maffei Rada Brochanova, said: “The museum wrote a statement to the police for unknown. Neither their identity nor citizenship were established. Therefore, any information in which the pair that damaged the work of art is attributed to names or nationality is unreliable. ”

Thus, messages about Ukrainian refugees who broke the exhibit in the Italian Museum, as well as the quotes of these people turned out to be fiction. The earliest such publication that was able to find “verified” appeared in the pro-Russian Telegram channel “Baba Yaga against»June 15 at 19:05 Moscow time, three days after the museum itself.

This is far from the first time that pro -Kromele media accuse Ukrainian refugees in Europe of various offenses and when such messages are not confirmed. For example, in 2023 Telegram channels They told About the Ukrainian, who allegedly damaged the statue in one of the galleries in Paris. Like this news, that information turned out to be a fake.
