In February 2025, posts went viral stating that in response to the US President’s criticism of Vladimir Zelensky, the Ukrainian authorities had limited access to the Truth Social social network. We checked how reliable such messages are.
Truth Social - social network, created Donald Trump and earned February 21, 2022. Three years later, on February 20, 2025, reports began to circulate en masse about the blocking of this platform in Ukraine. “Joke of the day: Trump’s social network Truth Social is blocked in Ukraine,” wrote the Telegram channel “Live broadcast"(764,000 views at the time of writing this analysis). TV presenter channel Vladimir Solovyov (212,000 views) clarified that this was done on behalf of the “worthless [Ukrainian President Vladimir] Zelensky,” whom Trump in his Truth Social post the day before named "a dictator without elections." Entrepreneur and founder of Tsargrad Konstantin Malofeev (338,000 views) added in his channel that there was no official announcement about the ban of the social network in Ukraine, but called the blocking “banal personal revenge” of Zelensky in response to Trump’s words. Approximately the same opinion was expressed by the head of the Russian Federation Council Commission on Information Policy Alexey Pushkov (11,000 views) and TV presenter Ruslan Ostashko (104,000), and the showman Andrey Bocharov (100,000) commented on the news as follows (spelling preserved): “Freedom of speech in Ukraine.”
According to the TGStat service, at the time of writing this analysis, more than 450 similar Russian-language posts appeared on Telegram, with a total of about 4.5 million views. The fact that the Truth Social social network was blocked in Ukraine was reported by the channels “Barrel of black caviar"(145,000 views), "Banks, money, two offshores"(130,000), "The Economist"(129,000), "Sheikh Tamir" (118,000), "First People's"(102,000), "Tsargrad-TV" (64,000), etc. Among the media, the ban was reported "RIA Novosti", "Arguments and facts", "News", Ura.ru, Lenta.ru, "Gazeta.ru", EADaily, "Regnum", "Business Online"etc. Similar posts get millions of views in the English-language segment of social networks and in other languages. Including this wrote English-language RT account on social network X.
In most publications about site blocking truthsocial.com in Ukraine, a screenshot is provided showing the logo of the social network and an English-language message: “Truth Social is currently not available in your territory.” As verified, it is indeed impossible to access the social network from Ukrainian IP addresses, and the user is shown the specified warning. However, the same thing happens if you try to do this on Russian territory. Information that the service is not available in Moscow, shown and in the screenshot in Solovyov’s post mentioned above, however, the TV presenter does not mention this fact in his text.
The presence of the logo along with a message about the inaccessibility of the social network indicates that its work was limited not by the responsible Ukrainian departments, but by Truth Social itself. The code on this page shows what's there used service Pages is a platform for website developers from the company Cloudflare, which manages a global network of servers and provides various services to protect and accelerate the operation of web resources. Most likely, it is precisely because of the settings of the Cloudflare account linked to Trump’s social network address that when the server returns an error message 403 (access to the requested resource is denied), users with Ukrainian IP addresses see a static page, as in the above screenshot. If access were denied by the authorities, the user would instead be shown a standard error warning for his browser.
How write fact checkers from the Open project, Internet users have published posts that Truth Social does not work in Ukraine before. For example, tweets about a similar access error appeared in February 2024 And November 2022 year. It is significant that in some cases there was talk of a ban on Ukrainian IP addresses by the platform.
In March 2024, the Ukrainian publication “Media Detector” released article about how Truth Social spreads Russian propaganda. In particular, the authors described their experience of registering on the platform:
“The official list of countries where the social network operates includes the USA, Canada, Brazil, Japan, Germany, Turkey and Australia. For the sake of this research, we registered a profile on this social network. Although it is not available on Polish Google Play, the application can be downloaded in ARC format or from the App Store. This network works without a VPN, but the registration process is complicated. To create a profile, you must provide an email address, but the social network does not accept all domains - in particular, it was not possible to use ukr.net email addresses, as well as temporary addresses like Proton Mail. After entering your Gmail address, you will receive a verification code, then the social network will ask you to enter your mobile phone number. It does not register users with Ukrainian numbers. Poland is not on the list of countries where the platform operates, but it accepted the Polish number and, using a Polish VPN, allowed us to enter the corresponding code from an SMS message.”
February 20, 2025, official representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Georgy Tikhy denied viral publications about the blocking of Truth Social. He stated:
“We have seen reports that access to the Truth Social social network has been blocked in Ukraine. These messages are not true. Ukraine did not and could not block access, because, unfortunately, the Truth Social social network was never available to users in Ukraine. According to publicly available information, Truth Social operates only in a number of countries (USA, Canada, Brazil, Australia and some others), and Ukraine is not included in this list. We would be grateful if Truth Social would add Ukraine to its approved regions.”
AFP, in turn, requested comment from Trump Media & Technology Group, which manages the US President's social network. “Reports that Truth Social is blocked in Ukraine are false. Truth Social has never been available in Ukraine,” stated company representative.
It is noteworthy that some Russian resources, including the agency “RIA Novosti» and Telegram channel Ruslana Ostashko, in their publications about the blocking of Truth Social in Ukraine, referred to the English-language Telegram channel Sputnik International. However, there is already a corresponding entry unavailable, but available another, which says: “Ukraine, you are fired! Despite reports that Zelensky has banned Trump's Truth Social in Ukraine, the truth is... Truth Social WAS NEVER AVAILABLE in Ukraine. SADLY!" Moreover, the site “Business Online“in his note about the blocking, he referred to this particular post from Sputnik International - probably, the editors of this publication did not notice that one of the sentences in the English text was hidden.
Thus, although the social network Truth Social does not work in Ukraine, the authorities of this country did not block it. According to a representative of the company that operates the platform, Trump's social network has never been available in Ukraine.
