In November 2024, the media and Telegram channels reported that the Ukrainian newspaper in an article about the rehabilitation center in Odessa edited a photo of the Armed Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, finally a leg lost in the war. We checked the reliability of these publications.
On November 11, a photo of notes allegedly posted in one of the Ukrainian newspapers began to spread on the network. The article uses a picture of a man who is sitting in a wheelchair against a background of installation with the inscription "I love the Armed Forces." At the same time, its right leg is recorded using a metal structure, and the left stands on the ground. The text of the notes briefly tells about the military rehabilitation center of rehabilitation in Odessa since 2023 and it is noted that the institution was opened on behalf of the President of Ukraine Vladimir Zelensky. In addition to photographs of the article, the media and Telegram channels published the same military photo in which he does not have a left leg, as well as a certificate of injury issued in the name of Evgeny Pogorelov. “Nothing unusual, just a Ukrainian newspaper in a note about the rehabilitation center of the Khokhlyatsky soldiers stopped for a disabled APU for a torn leg,” says Telegram channel “KB"(236,000 views at the time of writing this analysis). In the photo, notes under the heading “Defenders of Ukraine continue to undergo rehabilitation in Odessa”, neither the date of publication, nor the author of the text, or the name of the newspaper are indicated. The name of the rehabilitation center, which is being discussed, but it is said that the institution began work last year.
"Verified" discovered information about the opening Two Rehabilitation centers for the military in Odessa in 2023. Apparently, a photo editor was used to create a photograph of the newspaper article, with which the authors of the fake copied the healthy leg and inserted it into the place of the absent. In the picture it is noticeable that both feet are right in the photo.
According to a certificate, the picture was also distributed by the media and Telegram channels, the military in the photo is called Evgeny Valerievich Pogorelov. At the same time, the document has non -characteristic inaccuracies for official paper. Firstly, the certificate indicates two different dates for obtaining injuries: at first it is said that the fire-through wound of the knee joint was applied on January 10, 2023, and then-that on October 10, 2024. Secondly, the name of the military in different parts of the document is written in different ways: at the beginning of єvgeniy, then-єvgen. Finally, the certificate says that he was wounded in his right knee, but the man’s left leg was amputated in the photo.

In his post, @vovasanin writes about the collection of money to buy a prosthesis for a wounded Ukrainian paratrooper. The name of the military from the publication differs from the reference indicated in the certificate - the man in the photo is called Sergey Ostapenko, and the document was issued in the name of Evgenia Pogorelov. Trying to find other photos of Ostapenko and thereby additionally confirm his personality and the fact of wound, “verified” studied the picture using the Pimeyes recognition service, but the search did not lead to significant results.
Information about a fake photo in the Ukrainian newspaper was distributed mainly through Russian -speaking sources, this news is not in any authoritative Ukrainian media. The earliest publication about the alleged note with edited photos, which “verified” was found, appeared in the Telegram channel “Shaman Rahu»November 11, 2024 at 16:43 Moscow time. This channel has repeatedly become the primary source of inaccurate information about Ukraine - for example, distributed A false photo in evidence that the first lady of the country Elena Zelenskaya received Israeli citizenship.
Thus, the creators of the fake took a photograph of the wounded Ukrainian military from social networks, processed it and subsequently accompanied it with the text, mimicating under the article in the media. There was no evidence that any Ukrainian newspaper really published an edited picture to report on the work of the rehabilitation center in Odessa.
