Is it true that a Brazilian TV presenter mistakenly called Joe Biden bin Laden?

In November 2024, Russian-language media reported another incident related to the current US President. We have verified the accuracy of this news.

In a video clip from a TV report being circulated, a woman says the name in Portuguese head of the terrorist organization Al-Qaeda Osama bin Laden, killed by the American military, but after a remark from his interlocutor, he corrects himself and mentions Biden. Some publications specify that the Brazilian TV presenter's name is Ana Maria Braga, and this happened during the G20 summit.

Leading Russian media reported this (TASS, "RIA Novosti", RBC, Lenta.ru) and Telegram channels, for example “Live broadcast"(738,000 views at the time of writing this analysis), "Uncle Slava" (177,000) and "Putin on Telegram"(169,000).

On November 18–19, the Museum of Contemporary Art of Rio de Janeiro actually hosted another meeting heads of state of the Group of Twenty (G20). The United States was represented at the summit by President Joe Biden.

Ana Maria Braga's morning show Mais Você has been airing on the main Brazilian television channel TV Globo for 25 years. Initially, the program was purely culinary, but over time the presenter began to devote broadcasts to other topics: beauty and health, and sometimes politics. From time to time, incidents happen: for example, in 2022, after Braga’s story about racism against children, brought out image of a monkey. That error was technical. But another scandal turned into legal proceedings: in 2024, the court obliged Braga and TV Globo to pay 45,000 rials (about €7,400) for an episode 15 years ago - the presenter quoted a fragment of the book, but named the wrong writer, which was considered a violation of copyright.

November 19 at the beginning of the next broadcast of Braga told viewers about the main topic of the day in Brazil: “Today is the last day of the G20 summit, organized by the leaders of the world's leading economies, who gathered at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Rio de Janeiro. "President Lula and First Lady Jeanja greeted the heads of state and took a series of official photographs with French President Emmanuel Macron, as well as affectionately shaking hands with bin Laden from the United States." “To Joe Biden,” the puppet Braga immediately corrected parrot Luro Mane, her regular co-host. “Joe Biden! I'm actually a little out of my depth to begin with. Joe Biden! — the TV presenter responded.

In Brazil, the incident on television immediately became the reason for numerous memes. And then a fragment of the program (with and without subtitles) became diverge and outside the country. The wave of popularity began with tweet Brazilian journalist William de Lucca (334,000 views), which was then referred authors of the blog Eixo Politico (2.6 million views). Naturally, this case could not be ignored by the Russian media, which cover almost every curious episode related to Biden. Even Braga herself laughed at her slip of the tongue, reposted in her Instagram stories one of the viral posts with the caption “Oops!”

Thus, the video that caused a stir in Russian-language social networks is genuine. It is interesting that journalists more than once confused the previous American Democratic President Barack Obama with Osama bin Laden, probably due to the similarity of the words Osama and Obama in English. I published a selection of such cases The Washington Post.
