Is it true that this video shows the mountains of garbage left behind after the eco-festival in Malaga?

At the end of June 2024, a video was circulated on Telegram channels, allegedly filmed on one of the Spanish beaches shortly after the event of “green” activists. We checked whether this description of this video is correct.

The 38-second video shows a beach within the city, littered with a huge amount of garbage. According to the caption, this is La Malagueta beach in Malaga, Spain, the day after a festival dedicated to environmental issues.

In the Russian-language segment of the Network, this news was most widespread in Telegram, largely thanks to the channels “Ax 18+"(2.1 million views at the time of writing this analysis), "Russia now"(251,000), "Freshness"(243,000), "Sheikh Tamir" (158,000) and "Mousetrap"(149,000). It was published in other languages, including Spanish.

La Malagueta - beach in the center of Malaga. In the panorama in the service Google Street View you can see a sculptural composition representing the name of the beach. It is she, only from the reverse side, that is captured at the beginning and end of the viral video.

Back search screenshots on Google leads, in particular, to the page of a non-profit organization AndaLimpia on Instagram. On June 24, this NGO published not only what went viral on Telegram channels: video, but also many other pictures of a polluted beach.

Judging by description on the official website, AndaLimpia brings together volunteers who collect waste in public places in Malaga and its surroundings. How should from the organization’s posts on social networks, they were provided with work on La Malagueta by the San Juan holiday, which takes place in Spain on the 20th of June and marks the arrival of the hottest time of the year (the equivalent of this holiday among the Eastern Slavs is Ivan Kupala). IN Andalusia the main events take place annually on the night of June 24, and one of the main venues in Malaga —– La Malagueta beach, where you can attend concerts and pyrotechnic shows. Guests of the holiday usually leave behind mountains of garbage - according to data Malaga City Council, in 2024, 23 tons of waste were removed from local beaches, which, however, is 38% less than the year before. Volunteers from AndaLimpia posted photos from both cleanups, in which they took an active part, and expressed hopethat in a year such celebrations on La Malagueta will not be repeated. Not only Malaga suffers from garbage this night - in Barcelona this year the scale of pollution was even higher higher.

Thus, the viral video was distributed with an incorrect description: the video was filmed by environmental activists who were helping to clean up the beach after a holiday that had nothing to do with protecting the environment.

According to the TGStat service, the first (at least in the Russian-language segment of Telegram) video with a similar caption was posted by the channel “Freshness» June 24 at 18:37 Moscow time (5400 reposts). Previously he was several times caught in spreading misinformation.
