At the beginning of December 2023, a video circulated on social networks, allegedly shown in the center of New York. The video contained the phrases “It’s all over with Kiev” and “Will the Russians stop or go further?” We have verified the authenticity of this entry.
On December 9, Telegram reported that an advertisement for CNN’s Political Briefing program was being shown on a screen in New York. The video accompanying the publication flashes headlines about the end of Kyiv and the advance of Russian troops. At the end there is a preview of the show itself. Telegram channels, in particular, wrote about this “Ne.Sugar"(254,000 views at the time of writing this analysis), "Solovyov"(253,000), "Putin on Telegram" (158,000), "Sheikh Tamir" (154,000) and "Ukraine.ru"(125,000).
A video about the imminent end of Kyiv and the successes of Russia appeared against the background messages about disagreements between the Ukrainian political and military leadership, as well as after numerous articles in American Media about the failed Ukrainian counter-offensive.
Political Briefing is weekly podcast, produced by CNN. It is hosted by a TV channel political commentator David Challian, and the podcast itself is dedicated to US domestic politics. Here are the topics of the latest episodes: Former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie and the presidential race (December 8); the situation in the US Democratic Party before the elections (December 1); conversation about the role of media in politics (November 24); New Hampshire primaryNovember 17); opinion polls and the chances of democratic candidates in the primaries (November 10). Among the earlier autumn episodes, it was also not possible to find episodes entirely dedicated to the war in Ukraine. Additionally, a CNN spokesperson reported Agence France Presse that the television company has nothing to do with the video that went viral on social networks.
The building where the advertisement for the podcast was supposedly placed was, in fact, located in Times Square in New York, this is the facade hotel New York Marriott Marquis. Previously, Russian Telegram channels repeatedly published videos about the media façade on the same building: for example, about advertising with the phrase “Zelensky is peace duke” and about the image, comparing Zelensky to a black hole.
By advertising on the New York Marriott Marquis is engaged Silvercast Media Company. Her representative stated AFP that the CNN ad video shown in the viral video is fake.
Finally, Times Square is one of the most crowded places in New York and a popular tourist attraction. Among other attractions, video from New York Square is continuously broadcast on the site EarthCam. “Verified” watched the broadcasts on this portal over the past week and did not see a video advertising a CNN podcast on the media facade. We can conclude that the authors of the fake, as in previous In cases, the image was digitally superimposed either on a previously publicly posted video or on a specially filmed video of a media façade in Times Square.
We found the earliest mention of the fake video in the Telegram channel “Olesya Loseva"(46,000 views), where a post with him was published on December 9 at 12:01 Moscow time. This Telegram channel has already mentioned "Verified" in debriefings fakes.
Thus, we have before us another fake in a series of images, the purpose of which is to show the disappointment of the United States in the President of Ukraine or in general in helping this country. CNN and the company that owns the screen deny that such a video has anything to do with them. No traces of such advertising could be found outside of pro-Kremlin Telegram channels and other similar resources.
