At the beginning of December 2023, a cover of an American magazine dedicated to the death of the former US Secretary of State circulated online. The President of Ukraine is also present in this picture. We decided to check if this is a real cover.
On December 1, the cover of the American magazine The Nation appeared on social networks. The drawing shows Henry Kissinger falling into hell and US President Joe Biden clinging to the edge of a cliff. Zelensky stands above them and asks: “Joe, what’s the password for the credit card?” This cover appeared the day after the death of the former US Secretary of State became known. The caricature was reported, for example, by Telegram channels “Olesya Loseva"(13,000 views at the time of writing this analysis), "V🇷🇺Hand of the Kremlin🇷🇺Z" (6000) and "Vzwater"(5000).
Henry Kissinger died November 29, 2023 - in Moscow it was already the morning of November 30. The cover began circulating on social media a little more than 24 hours later. It is difficult to imagine that a full-fledged issue of the magazine was prepared in such a short time, which, judging by the viral image, allegedly contains other articles not related to Kissinger - their titles are indicated in the upper right corner of the viral image.
Under the title of the magazine on the cover distributed on social networks it is indicated that this is a special issue, to the right above the title is the date November 30. The Nation is published every two weeks, and the magazine usually indicates two dates - by November 30, the issue went on sale for November 27 / December 4. It is dedicated to a completely different topic: the fate of Jennifer Weisselberg, the ex-wife of a Trump Organization employee. The headline on the cover of this issue reads: “No Longer Married to the Mafia,” a play on the title famous film. Special issues of The Nation are published once a year, at the end of December, and other similar issues from the magazine over the past two years there was no.
During 2022-2023, The Nation never put Zelensky's portrait on the cover. And here is the issue dedicated to Henry Kissinger, went out at the end of May 2023. On the cover, the former US Secretary of State, then 100 years old, sits in front of a cake with candles. Blood-like icing drips from the cake, on which are written the names of countries where the United States pursued dubious policies under Kissinger: Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Chile, Bangladesh, etc.
There are also smaller inconsistencies in the image circulating on social media. Thus, the font in which the name of the publication’s website is printed in the lower left corner of the picture differs from the real one. This is especially noticeable in the example of the letter M.
The original source of The Nation’s fake cover was the Telegram channel “Vzwater", where a post with this image appeared on December 1 at 14:31 Moscow time. This is not the first fake The Nation cover that Verified has taken apart. At the end of June 2023, Telegram went viral cover, dedicated to the death of the Titan bathyscaphe and Zelensky complaining about the lack of attention from the media. The primary source then was the Telegram channel “Olesya Loseva”, which also published the cover with Kissinger.
