Is it true that Dior stopped working with Bella Hadid because of her pro-Palestinian stance?

In November 2023, news spread on the Internet that the fashion house had replaced Hadid with Israeli model Mai Tager because of statements in support of Palestine. We decided to check if this is true.

Many media outlets reported on the scandalous dismissal of the supermodel (for example, Lenta.ru, BFM.ru, "News", "Arguments and facts", Life). Users of social networks write about this (X, "VKontakte", Facebook*) And blogging platforms. Many popular Telegram channels also published the news, for example Mash (855,000 views at the time of writing this analysis), “VPS"(355,000), "Rhymes and punches"(211,000), Kosti (192,000), "Moscow 24"(127,000).

American supermodel of Dutch-Palestinian origin Bella Hadid For many years he has consistently supported the movement for Palestinian freedom. For example, in 2017 she posted on Instagram* fast, where she expressed regret over the recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel by Donald Trump, then acting President of the United States. In 2022 she told in an interview with the REP podcast that her stance on the issue has cost her several advertising contracts and even relationships with close friends.

Some time after the Hamas terrorist attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, and the ensuing military response, Hadid posted on her Instagram page statement in support of Palestinian civilians. She apologized for her long silence, said she and her family had received threats because of her Palestinian heritage, and said her heart bleeds over what is happening in the Gaza Strip. Hadid noted that “there is a humanitarian crisis in Gaza that needs to be addressed. Families need access to water and food. Hospitals need fuel to power generators, care for the wounded and keep people alive.” She called for "continuing pressure on our leaders, wherever we are, to ensure that they do not forget the urgent needs of the people of Gaza and ensure that innocent Palestinian citizens do not become the forgotten victims of this war." At the same time, in her statement, the supermodel condemned the actions of Hamas and said that she mourns with the Israeli families who suffered from terrorists.

"Verified" could not be found on website or in accounts Dior in social networks There are no official statements about the Hamas attack and the subsequent Israeli reaction, so there is no reason to believe that the fashion house clearly supports one of the parties to the conflict. Bella Hadid worked with Dior since 2016, and her earlier pro-Palestinian speeches have not stopped her from being an ambassador for the brand.

Judging by the model’s Instagram, the collaboration between Hadid and Dior ended long before October 2023 - back in March of the same year she reported, which has begun a collaboration with the Charlotte Tilbury Beauty brand. There were no official statements about Hadid’s departure from the French fashion house, but beauty journalists assumed, that it is unlikely that the model will be able to cooperate with both companies at once. Indeed, after announcing a job with Charlotte Tilbury Beauty in account supermodels did not post a single photo with Dior advertising on Instagram, just like in accounts the brand did not have any pictures or videos featuring Hadid. Moreover, the Associated Press news agency reports citing an anonymous source familiar with the situation that the partnership between Hadid and Dior ended even earlier - in March 2022 - for commercial reasons.

Rumors that Dior replaced Hadid with Israeli Mai Tager appeared after publication in early November 2023 video a new holiday advertising campaign for the fashion house, in which Tager, among other models, starred. However, it would be incorrect to say that she replaced Hadid in the fashion house, since Tager collaborated with Dior until October 2023, for example participated in the brand's New Year's ad the year before. However, it is worth noting that Tager’s participation in both videos is quite episodic; the leading role in both videos went to model and actress Anya Taylor-Joy. Hadid was not in the 2022 New Year's ad, just like a year later.

Note that this is not the first time that rumors about Bella Hadid’s dismissal from Dior due to pro-Palestinian statements have arisen. So, in May 2021, it also went viral on the Internet news about terminating a contract with a supermodel due to her participation in an action in support of Palestine. However, Hadid represented the brand for almost another year.

Thus, Dior did not fire Hadid because of her pro-Palestinian position - by the time the statement was published, which allegedly caused the termination of the contract with her, she had already been working with another brand for more than six months, and according to informed sources, her contract with Dior ended a year earlier. This is not the supermodel’s first public appearance in support of Palestine, which previously did not prevent her from collaborating with the fashion house. Israeli model Mai Tager, who allegedly replaced Hadid, had worked with Dior before, she starred in their commercials more than a year before the events of October 2023 and the corresponding statement by Hadid.
