On August 29, 2023, Dmitry Medvedev in his Telegram channel once again threatened the Western countries with war. He reinforced his words with several quotes, including the allegedly by the saying of Vladimir Lenin. We decided to check if such an attribution is correct.
The post of Medvedev The fact that the allies of Ukraine allegedly “agreed on any blows throughout the Russian”, Russian media cited widely, and many of them, following the deputy chairman of the Council of People's Commissars of the Russian Federation, attributed the phrase “we are remembered while we are interfering with others”. Among them TASS, URA.RU, "Sight"And the website of the TV channel"Tsargrad". This phrase long before the ex-president was issued for the statement of the leader of the Bolsheviks many online to citizens (for example, Citaty.info), it is found in blogs on the platform "Zen",VKontakte"And in Instagram.
Lenin's works have been well studied: in Soviet times, five collected works were published, Last (1958–1966) became the most voluminous - 55 volumes. At the same time, this publication can hardly be called complete, since some articles of Lenin were not included in it. Therefore, historians often turn to the first two publications of collected works: 1920-1927 And 1925-1934. All of them, however, are now available to the reader.
The search in Lenin’s writings phrases “we are remembered while we interfere with others” did not bring the result. There are no traces of this statement either in digitized books on website of the Russian State LibraryNot in the Google Book service. In the latter case, only Mention This phrase in the book of the photographer and traveler Viktor Stasevich, and in the form of a direct speech of one of the heroes.
In fact, the phrase has nothing to do with Lenin. This is a line from the song “Nautilus Pompilius” “The City of Brotherly Love”, text Which was written by Ilya Kormiltsev: "We live in the city of fraternal love - we are remembered while we interfere with others."
It was not possible to find out to whom and when exactly the idea came to combine a phrase from a song with the mention of Lenin. Most Early example of their joint use, found “verified”, dates back to 2006 - this is a demotivator depicting Lenin, which shows Kukish. Judging by the copy, the picture was created no later than 2004, and a certain alex bodov is indicated as the copyright holder.

It is likely that this demotivator caused the appearance of Ljenin falsecytas on numerous entertainment sites.
Note that Dmitry Medvedev often resorts to quotes in his posts and articles, and not always successfully. So, for an article published in Rossiyskaya Gazeta on July 2, 2023, Medvedev took as an epigraph the phrase “When it seems that the whole world is against you, remember that the aircraft takes off not in the wind, but against it”, attributing it to Ain Rand, the author of the novel “Atlant straightened his shoulders”. Subsequently It turned outthat the author of the article confused two quotes published next to each other on the site anekdotov.net.
