In July 2023, entertainment resources circulated publications that the director of “Titanic” and “Terminator” plans to film the story of the recent death of a submersible in the Atlantic Ocean. We checked if this is true.
The news began to spread en masse on the RuNet on July 14. According to numerous social media posts, Cameron is in talks with an unnamed streaming service to create series, or film about the sinking of the Titan submarine. At the same time, the authors of some publications claim, that the director personally announced the idea of such a project, and somewhere clarifythat this is only information from the source of the British publication The Sun. Often emphasizedthat Cameron is ready to invest personal funds in the project.
Posts about the supposedly upcoming film project about “Titan” appeared in large public pages on VKontakte, including “KB"(282,000 views at the time of writing this analysis), "Lentach"(257,000), "Ax - storage"(255,000), "№ - News of the day"(175,000), PostNews (112,000), "Ax - hot news"(103,000), "ZSH" (76,000) and "New school 18+"(20,000). Similar entries about the rumor from the tabloid The Sun are also available on other platforms - for example, in Telegram channels Nexta Live (305,000 views), "Well done Sagittarius" (163,000), "Heavenly"(145,000) and MDK (115,000).

The crash of OceanGate's deep-sea submersible Titan happened in the Atlantic Ocean on June 18, 2023 during a dive to the sunken liner Titanic. There were five people on board the ship, including two crew members and three tourists. June 22nd them all recognized dead, as debris was discovered indicating critical damage to the device. June 28 US Coast Guard reported about the discovery of suspected human remains in the disaster area.
About two weeks later, on July 13, the website of the British newspaper The Sun actually appeared a note entitled “Deep Dive. "Titanic" director James Cameron is in talks with a major streaming network to create a drama series about the doomed submarine "Titan." According to the publication's unnamed sources, representatives of the streaming service (which is not specified) themselves turned to Cameron with a request to direct a high-budget series. “This topic is close to his heart. He told the story of the Titanic with such compassion that it seemed like a logical move for him. "Tracking the steps of those on board the Titan is a massive undertaking and will require a lot of time, money and resources," an anonymous source told The Sun. In addition, the note includes the names of two actors allegedly vying for participation in the project - Matt Damon and Kumail Nanjiani.

Since the information in the original source is presented as a rumor and not an official announcement, it is logical that at the time of publication of The Sun’s material, there was no confirmation or refutation of such news either on the social networks of the above-mentioned celebrities or on the resources of major streaming platforms. Authoritative publications about the film industry did not write about this rumor either - on the contrary, on July 15 on the websites Variety, The Hollywood Reporter And Deadline Hollywood There were denials of the publication in the British tabloid.
The fact is that Cameron himself commented on the news on Twitter that day. “I usually don’t react to offensive rumors in the media, but now I need to do this. I am NOT involved in negotiations for an OceanGate film and never will be,” wrote director Note that The Sun's text talked about the series, and the director mentioned the film - probably the rumor reached him in a distorted form.

It is not surprising that many believed in a similar project from James Cameron, because he not only made a feature film about the crash “Titanic", won in 11 Oscar nominations, but also authored the documentary film “Ghosts of the Abyss: Titanic" Moreover, according to words the film maker himself, he made underwater expeditions to the sunken liner more than 30 times, and March 26, 2012 alone went down to the bottom of the Mariana Trench in the Deepsea Challenger submersible. In a recent interview with ABC News, Cameron criticized OceanGate and said that the disasters that occurred with their submersible and the Titanic were similar due to neglect of safety issues.
At the time of writing this analysis, the director’s tweet received almost 3 million views. Many Russian media outlets that wrote about Cameron's supposedly upcoming series subsequently issued denials. At the beginning of this text, only those resources are mentioned where, at the time of writing this text, “Verified” could not find a refutation or correction of the original posts.
The Sun tabloid is far away not for the first time publishes unreliable “exclusive” materials based only on the words of some anonymous sources. For example, previously "Verified" sorted it out a rumor launched by this publication back in 1999 that singer and actress Jennifer Lopez had insured her buttocks for millions of dollars.
