At the end of June and early July 2023, the covers of The National and Humor Times appeared on the Web, ridicuating the President of Ukraine. We decided to check if these are the real covers.
American magazine The Nation
On June 29, The Nation magazine began to spread on the network. The figure shows the President of Ukraine Vladimir Zelensky at the desktop. In front of him are screens with logos of various television channels, from CNN to RT, showing the battanian bathyscaphe, crashed June 18. " For this supposedly new cover, The Nation was reported, for example, Telegram channels "Own correspondent"(99,000 views at the time of writing this analysis), Tariknezalejko (61,000), "DPR 🅉 info 🇷🇺"(50,000) and"Before everyone else. Well, almost. Special operation"(12 000).
Under the name of the magazine on the cover distributed in social networks, it is indicated that this is a special issue, on the right above the name - dates on June 26 / July 3, 2023. The Nation comes out at the time of time every two weeks, and the number for June 26 / July 3 really exists, however, he has a completely different cover. This issue is devoted to unscrupulous mortgage investors, it is available on the magazine website.
There is almost no technical information on the typical cover of The Nation, so it is not possible to find errors that the authors of such fakes. But in the lower left corner there is a reference to the website of the magazine Thenation.com. On real covers of the magazine, this inscription is made in a manuscript style and a more pale font.
The nation is the primary source of the fake cover of The Nation "The Telegram channel"Olesya Loseva"(8000 views), where the post with the cover appeared on June 29 at 12:44 Moscow time.
American magazine Humor Times
On July 7, the cover of the American satirical magazine Humor Times appeared on the Web. The caricature depicts a boxing ring on which Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg are beaten by Vladimir Zelensky. In the lower left corner is a reference signature: "billionaires beat the beggar in the battle for attention." We are talking about one of the main media events of early July - fightto which MASK CALL Zuckerberg on Twitter. This cover, in particular, wrote Telegram channels "Bullet"(141,000 views at the time of writing this analysis),"Ostashko! Important"(112 000) and"Putin TG Team"(54 000).
In the upper left corner of the viral image it is indicated that this is issue No. 376, in the right corner - the inscription "July 2023". On the official website there is The archive of the covers Since 1991, but the latter of them dates back to 2022. However, the numbers for 2023 can be found in sectionwhere the order of individual issues is placed.
The journal applies through numbering in addition to the instructions of the month and year. The July number on the site is designated as No. 375, and on its cover a completely different drawing-a caricature of a T-shirt of Pence, in the past of the US Vice President (2017–2021), who announced the desire to run for the post of head of state in 2024. This image "tested" has already cited parsing the previous fake cover Humor Times. Accordingly, No. 376, which at the time of publication of the caricature with the battle of Mask and Zuckerberg has not yet come out, will be designated as the August number.
As in the previous case, the primary source of the fake was the Telegram channel "Olesya Loseva"(8000 views), where the post with the cover appeared on July 7 at 13:15 Moscow time.
