Is it true that Biden recently got into trouble for making a racist joke?

In late June 2023, a widely circulated video showed the US President telling a black girl that if she were his daughter, she would be white and would not be stopped by the police. We checked if this post is real.

The viral video lasts just over 20 seconds. In it, a black girl says that she was recently stopped by the police for “a trivial matter” and asks Joe Biden standing on stage a question: “If I were your daughter, what advice would you give me the next time I get stopped by the police?” The politician responds: “If you were my daughter, you would be a white girl and you wouldn’t be stopped.” Then the audience laughs in the hall, and the video ends. In some publications TBCthat the event took place at Benedict College in Columbia, South Carolina. Somewhere Biden's phrase interpreted as if he told a black student that she should have been born white.

The recording went viral on June 27 - at the time of writing this analysis, there were more than 1,050 posts on Telegram with this video, which in total collected almost 16 million views, according to the TGStat service. For example, the channel “Sanya in Florida” (370,000 views) is like this commented Biden's words: “The standard techniques of Democrats in the United States are dividing society along racial lines, creating a non-existent problem and successfully solving it.” Actor Oscar Kucera (35,000 views) wrote: “If anything, this is the president of all America,” and in the channel “Shaman Rahu” (3000) countedthat because of his words, Biden lost the support of the entire African-American population of the country. In some popular channels, for example Putin TG Team (60,000 views), it is reported that the American president allegedly got into a scandal in connection with this joke. Similar publications about this supposedly recent event also appeared in the channels “Ax 18+"(2.8 million views), "Trash⚡️Ukraine"(998,000), "Live broadcast"(791,000), "Solovyov"(473,000), "All-Seeing Eye 🇺🇦 Ukraine"(299,000), "Putin on Telegram"(220,000), "Not Morgenstern"(170,000), Voblya (168,000), "Bullet"(150,000) and MDK (132,000). The video was widely distributed on other social networks, such as “VKontakte" And Twitter, as well as according to some media, including “Constantinople", "Gazeta.ru", "Data" And Tvr.by.

By searching for keywords "Verified" I found that Biden spoke V Benedict College (this educational institution is historically focused on the black population) back on October 26, 2019 - then he was only one of the candidates for the presidency of the United States from the Democratic Party. It turns out that the recording that went viral in June 2023 is almost four years old. Note that some publications after some time added information about the “age” of the video - for example, in the social networks of TV channels NTV (52,000 views) and 360° (131,000), specifying that “the video did not become less funny because of this.”

On October 27, 2019, another recording of the same speech appeared on Biden’s verified social networks - for example, in his twitter. The video was captioned as follows: “Institutional racism must no longer exist. As president, I will implement changes that will help end this." In this version of the video, right after the joke, as the applause and laughter begin, Biden says, “No. No. But here's the thing: what I told you is the problem. This is wrong. Institutional racism still exists.”

Moreover, "Verified" detected a 44-second video, an excerpt from which went viral in 2023 (it turns out that the original video was cut approximately in half). Some of Biden's words were drowned out by the sound of applause, but he could still be heard talking about the wrongness of his joke and the racism that still exists. The future president then states, "And it requires every police department in the country to undergo what used to be called sensitivity training when I was first getting involved in the women's rights movement."

Thus, the video that went viral in June 2023 was recorded even before Biden won the US presidential election in 2020. And although the video with the quote is genuine, it is taken out of context: in fact, in his joke, the politician gave an example of racial inequality that still exists in the United States, condemned this phenomenon and promised to fight it.

It is noteworthy that another participant in the Democratic primaries, Bernie Sanders, spoke at the same forum at Benedict College, who, according to numerous messages American Media, has come under fire for its answer to a similar question. Black student asked Sanders: “If I were your son, what advice would you give me the next time I get stopped by the police?” The politician responded: “I would respect what they are doing so as not to get a bullet in the back of the head. But I would also remember that we, as a nation, must hold police officers accountable for the actions they commit. If I were my son, I would be very careful in my interactions with this police officer, but I would also protect my rights, know my rights and, if possible, make sure that the police camera is recording what is happening.” By words CBS News correspondent, Sanders' speech was not met with thunderous applause and approval from the audience.
