For several years, Internet users have been spreading words that Meryl Streep allegedly said or wrote. The speech is most often referred to as a "poignant quote" from the Oscar-winning actress, in which she revealed what things in her life she would no longer tolerate. We checked whether she really said that.
Usually on social networks you can find the following Russian-language version of the quote: “I am no longer going to put up with a lot of things, and not because I have become arrogant or arrogant, no, only because I have reached a certain stage in life - a stage at which I no longer want to waste time on things that do not satisfy me, or on things that touch me, cause me pain. I am no longer going to tolerate cynicism, excessive criticism, harsh demands of any kind. I no longer have the desire to satisfy those who do not like me, to love those who do not like me, and to smile at those who will not smile back at me.
I will no longer devote a single minute to those who lie or try to manipulate me. I decided to no longer exist in pretense, hypocrisy, lies and cheap, insincere praise. I will no longer tolerate partially educated or arrogant scientists. I'm not going to deal with gossip, I hate conflicts and comparisons. I believe that the world consists of opposites, that the world is diverse, so I try to avoid people with a rigid character who are unable to adapt to their surroundings. I despise betrayal and infidelity in friendship. I will not be able to get along with those who are not capable of a real compliment, who are not able to encourage and inspire with their words, and I will not be able to get along with those who do not like animals. Exaggerations bore me. And yes, above all else, I will no longer tolerate those who do not deserve my patience.”
On the social network VKontakte at least several hundred similar text entries mentioning Streep, and about 70 of which received more thousands likes and tens or hundreds thousand views. The quote was published on Facebook by MIF Publishing House - fasting More than 500 people shared. The speech authored by the actress can also be found on numerous websites with quotes.
In English, the quote is known as "I no longer...". Its text can be seen in the picture below.

Meryl Streep may agree with these words, but there is no evidence that she ever said them or was even familiar with them. The real author of the speech is a Portuguese writer and life coach Jose Micard Teixeira, so the original was in Portuguese. Apparently, at some point, someone either deliberately or accidentally attributed these words to the actress. And the quote became widely known a couple of years after Streep was credited as its author—in the summer of 2014. Then the English translation began to spread across Facebook. After some time, the Russian version also appeared.
Teixeira himself has said more than once that his words are attributed to the actress. For example, one day on his personal Facebook page he asked his readers to help him restore the truth when the American magazine Obvious published quote under Streep's name. The writer invited subscribers to leave comments about who the real author of the words is. As a result, the magazine publication was updated and information about Teixeira was added.
At the same time, the mention of Streep is often not removed even after correction, but simply added that the actress adheres to the same principles that are mentioned in the speech. In addition to Obvious magazine, similar happened and in IndieWire. Even Teixeira himself, referring to articles from the Internet, spokethat Streep lives by his principles. However, there was no evidence that she had seen this speech at least once.
It was also not possible to establish who and when first indicated the wrong authorship. IndieWire and Snopes it is believed that in July 2014 the quote became widespread thanks to a blog Ioadicaeu's Blog, although the words were attributed to Streep before him.
Teixeira himself may not be at all upset by the popularity gained from the misattribution of the quote. He even wrote the book Tattoos on a Grain of Sand, which features the following inscription on the cover: "Includes the quote 'I'm Not Gonna Go Anymore', shared by millions of people around the world."
