Are photographs of an ancient statue with a QR code instead of a face reliable?

A picture with a very unusual statue is distributed in social networks-according to users, Mayan Indians came up with QR codes a few millennia ago. We checked the reliability of this photo.

In November 2021, users shared images Facebook, Twitter, Livejournal and other social networks. Photos of a statue with a face in the form of a QR code appeared on the Internet earlier: for example, in 2020 in Instagram, and in 2018-in Russian And Ukrainian regional media. It has gained particular popularity on resources dedicated otherworldly phenomena And aliens.

Judging by the search results of Google, which became a viral photo first appeared on the network in 2015. At the same time, among the sites where it is presented, there were no museums or sites about recent archaeological finds-mainly a picture is mentioned by users of the blog-platforms like Pikabu or 9GAG. None of the resources with this photo saying who, where and when it was made.

In the same 2015, users began to understand where the strange statue came from. The QR code was Invented Only in the mid-1990s, so he could not appear on a statue, which supposedly several hundred, or even thousands of years. Other details attracted attention: for example, the square head of the statue for some reason discarded a round shadow.

Activist Mike West Transferred The code from the statue to the machine -readable format. It turned out that he leads to the website of the Alteco Mexico store, where electronic components and parts are sold. West suggested that the statue was either part of the unusual exhibition that Alteco sponsored, or the artist simply chose a random QR code to create his work. The fact that this statue has nothing to do with the Indians or History, the activist is sure, but, unfortunately, we, unfortunately, have not yet been able to establish the author of the work.
