Is it true that the Portuguese dictator Salazar was given a separate copy of his daily newspaper during the last years of his life?

Historians, and behind them Media report an interesting fact from the life of the dictator. In 1968, the politician was half paralyzed as a result of a massive stroke, and after a while he was removed from government affairs. However, Salazar himself was not informed about this - the ministers regularly reported to him, as if he remained the head of government. Moreover, a newspaper was printed for him in one copy, telling only good news. We decided to check if this is true.

Describing the last years of the life of the rulers, the media lead interesting detail: “So, Salazar, who did not like the United States, decided not to tell that American astronauts landed on the moon.” Also, his newspaper did not mention the change of government or popular unrest.

António de Oliveira Salazar was born in 1889 into a conservative religious family. From 1900 to 1908, he studied at a Catholic seminary and was preparing to become a priest, but in 1910 he entered the Faculty of Law at the University of Coimbra. After graduating with honors, he stayed within the walls of the educational institution as a teacher, and since 1917 - and head of the department of political economy and finance. In 1928, General Antonio Carmona came to power as a result of a military coup. invited Professor Salazar to head the country's Ministry of Finance. Just four years later, former teacher takes post of prime minister. In total, Antonio de Salazar ruled Portugal for 36 years.

In August 1968, as a result of a fall from a sun lounger (according to another versions, he fell in the shower) of the dictator happened extensive stroke. He was urgently operated on, but Salazar was in a coma for several days. On September 27, 1968, the President of Portugal, America Tomas took off Salazar from the post of prime minister, entrusting the leadership of the government to Marcel Cajetan. When Salazar came to his senses, his loyal supporters decided not to upset him with news of personnel changes. They followed the recommendations of doctors, who feared that after a serious illness, Salazar might not be able to bear the stress of such news. Therefore, to maintain the illusion of his power, ministers regularly came to the half-paralyzed politician to report on the state of affairs.

Moreover, on the advice of doctors, a separate copy of his favorite newspaper, Diário de Notícias, was printed for the former prime minister. Biographers about this told his housekeeper and part-time secretary Maria di Jesus, as well as the attending physician of politician Eduardo Coelho. Roland Faure, a reporter for the French newspaper L'Aurore, interviewed Antonio Salazar in August 1969. Journalist notedthat the politician knew that Georges Pompidou had replaced Charles de Gaulle, but was completely unaware of the new government in his country. In that conversation, Salazar criticized the policies of the UN, the United States, and especially the Soviet Union. “Who can say that the Russians, if they settle on the Moon, will not try to use it as a basis for aggression?” - Roland Faure recalls his words (man landing on the moon was committed a month before the conversation, but Salazar still spoke about it as a theoretical possibility).

Antonio Salazar lived after the stroke for just under two years. He died July 27, 1970 and was buried in his native village of Vimieiro near the graves of his parents.

Thus, based on eyewitness information and the absence of refutations, we can conclude that a separate copy of the newspaper was indeed printed for Antonio Salazar.
