Did the Italian ex-minister say that he was sure of sanctions against Russia until he stopped at a gas station?

The quote “I was convinced that sanctions were imposed against Russia until I stopped at a gas station,” attributed to the Italian politician Paolo Savone, went viral on the Internet. We decided to check if he said this.

The quote was widely circulated in the media, Savona is quoted "Moskovsky Komsomolets", "Komsomolskaya Pravda", "Tsargrad", TV channel "360", "Public News Service", Ruposters, "Novocherkassk Vedomosti" and others. Users of social networks also picked it up: the quote can be found in blogs on "Yandex.Zene", on Reddit, V "Twitter", Facebook and publics "VKontakte".

The quote attributed to the Italian politician appears in two versions: “I was convinced that sanctions were imposed against Russia until I stopped at a gas station” and “I was convinced that sanctions were against Russia until I stopped at a gas station.” Often such messages also include a screenshot from Twitter, where Savona allegedly wrote about this.

There really is such a post on Twitter. However, the account itself does not belong to Paolo Savone, it is a parody, which is clearly indicated in its description: “Liberer l'Italia dai tedeschi e dagli italiani tedeschi. Parodia, capito? PA-RO-DI-A!” This can be translated as follows: “I will liberate Italy from the Germans and German Italians. Parody, okay? PARODY!".

In the real social networks of the Italian politician - not in Facebook, neither in "Twitter" - there is no such post.

Moreover, previously our fellow fact checkers also tried confirm the correctness of this quote and, like us, came to the conclusion that it was mistakenly attributed to Savona.
