On social networks you can often see a motivational quote supposedly from Jim Carrey about how it’s easier to get out of bed in the morning when you’re happy. We found out whether the actor said such words.
The phrase “You’ll be surprised how easy it is to get out of bed in the morning when you’re happy” and its derivatives with attribution to Kerry are also found in Twitter, and in Facebook, and in "Odnoklassniki", and in "VKontakte", and in Instagram. Often posts with these words receive thousands of likes and hundreds of reposts. Besides, in Runet there is a bunch sites with quotes, where these “words of Kerry” are also quoted.
But in English, such a phrase is not found anywhere, especially by the famous comedian. Considering that Kerry is Canadian and not Russian, the likelihood that he originally uttered the phrase in Russian tends to zero.
To determine the real author, we tracked when the quote appeared on the RuNet and when it was assigned to the actor. According to search website "VKontakte", there are only about 700 text entries on the social network with these words and mention of Jim Carrey, and the most early dated July 2017. That is, around that period, the comedian became the “author” of the quote.
However, the phrase itself existed earlier - in 2015. Moreover, in the original version they used the feminine gender: “You will be surprised how easy it is to get out of bed in the morning when you are happy.” But at the same time, the author was often indicated by a certain Ivan Mashkovsky. On some sites indicatedthat Mashkovsky is a character from a samizdat called “Unique Reality” (“NR”), and among other characters appears Grigory Palych.
When searching for people with that name, we found designer, engaged creation and layout of multi-page publications (magazines, newspapers, brochures), as well as design of social networks. At the same time, his VK group “Printing design, logos, custom photo retouching” also posted motivational quotes, but did not contain the phrase he was looking for. Among the group's subscribers there was also a user Grigory Palych, who has reposts of the public “Unique Reality” on his wall (the VKontakte search does not show it, perhaps due to the 18+ topic).
And at that moment everything came together: the administrator of “NR” turned out to be the same Grigory Palych, the same Ivan Mashkovsky was subscribed to the public, and the links indicated the same group “Printing Design”. And the original quote was published April 6, 2015. We wrote to Ivan, and in personal correspondence he confirmed that he was the author of the phrase. Mashkovsky added that not all quotes in the community were invented by the administrators, but only some.
In conclusion, we note that the phrase about bed and happiness in meaning is very reminiscent of the words from the 2004 novel "Where the Rainbow Ends" (Where Rainbows End) by Cecilia Ahern. In the 12th chapter of the book there is this moment: “You will be surprised how easy it is to get out of bed in the morning if you have to do something that does not make you want to throw yourself out of the window.” By the way, this quote was published more than once in "Unique reality".
