Is it true that in Europe they are demanding the inclusion of an LGBT character in the animated series “Masha and the Bear”?

On March 7, 2021, guests of the “Sunday Evening with Vladimir Solovyov” program discussed how justified the European Parliament’s requirement regarding Russian animators is. We checked the news, which became a reason for discussion.

In the next episode of the weekly talk show “Sunday Evening with Vladimir Solovyov,” the host, along with invited guests, once again discussed relations between Russia and Western countries. In the first part of the program, the discussion was attended by LDPR leader Vladimir Zhirinovsky, director Karen Shakhnazarov, political scientist Nikolai Zlobin, State Duma deputy Oleg Morozov, adviser to the director of the Institute of Scientific Information for Social Sciences of the Russian Academy of Sciences Tatyana Parkhalina and dean of the Faculty of World Politics of Moscow State University Andrei Sidorov. When it came to sanctions, Sidorov mentioned the European demands for the producers of the Russian animated series “Masha and the Bear” and asked the question: “Are these sanctions or not?”

During the Sidorov program stated: “The other day the European Parliament adopted a requirement for one of our animators, the producer of the cartoon for little ones “Masha and the Bear”. What do they require? So that representatives of non-ordinary, so to speak, sexual orientations are included there: gays, lesbians, transgender people and the like - from June 1. From the point of view of European parliamentarians, this (the absence of such characters. - Ed.) violates the foundations, the traditions that have now developed in Europe.” Other broadcast participants eagerly commented on the “news” and, together with presenter Vladimir Solovyov, were outraged by such an initiative, but none of them expressed doubts about its truth.

The statements made by Sidorov are consistent with message news agency "Panorama", which was published on March 5, 2021. “Panorama” positions itself as a “satirical publication,” which is reflected in its logo and emphasized in the disclaimer placed under each material. The basis for the comic news was a comment from a certain “Director for Diversity of the Council of Europe, Charles Latain.” The dean of the Faculty of World Politics of Moscow State University was not embarrassed that the corresponding position in the Council of Europe and an employee with that name doesn't exist, and the very name “Charles Latain” is very reminiscent of the word “charlatan”. By the way, by Charles Latain on the Panorama website published about 150 news on a variety of topics.

After Sidorov was suspected of spreading a joke under the guise of real news, he admitted his mistake and apologized. “I haven't checked the source. <…> This is one of those cases where you don’t need to read the news from your phone before the broadcast. I usually use the original source." stated political scientist in a commentary to the Daily Storm. March 11, recording of a discussion in the “Sunday Evening” studio published “Panorama” itself also tweeted. From broadcast recordings posted on YouTube channels "Russia-1" and show “Sunday evening with Vladimir Solovyov”, this fragment was cut out, but is still available on the Internet full version (it is 4 minutes longer, the required fragment starts at the 1:19:17 mark).
